In the UK bingo is something of a national institution; we’ve been enjoying the game for over a century. The bingo phenomenon is popular all over the world, with millions of bingo lovers dotted about the globe. The thing is - bingo comes with a bit of a stereotypical image which usually consists of an older lady, probably a smoker, dabbing away at their local bingo hall. This stereotype can now be recognised as outdated, with the surge in popularity of online bingo.
Playing bingo online has changed things a great deal by bringing bingo into the 21st century. Online bingo sites like Mecca Bingo Mecca Bingo are appealing to a younger demographic, with games to be enjoyed by housewife and young professional alike. Proof that online bingo is appealing to a younger audience comes from statistics that have shown that more players between the ages of 18-25 are playing bingo than ever before.
One stigma that seems to stick with online bingo is the idea that bingo is for women. Although the age of players is reducing, the fact that statistics show that more young women are playing and do not account for young, or in fact, older men. However, recent research has shown that statistics which indicate that a massive proportion of online bingo players are women may be untrue. Although women do dominate this area of online gaming, it has been revealed that many men are also playing, but here’s the problem – they are posing under female pseudonyms.
Men who play bingo are likely to pose under a female name because they are embarrassed of being associated with a game that has such a feminine stereotype attached to it. This is a problem! Bingo is a great game to be enjoyed by all, and in fact, the early origins of the game in Italy in the 1700’s dictated that women were not allowed to play! It’s a turnaround for bingo which started out as a male-dominated game and perhaps men need to take pride in their bingo playing once more.
Online bingo continues to increase in popularity, with more and more players signing up every day. As the image of the average bingo player slowly but surely changes, perhaps the next stereotype will become a young professional male! Well, we can dream...
